Every session begins with a planning consultation to design your portrait experience. We will discuss wardrobe, location, style and plan for your custom finished portrait art.
During an average session, we spend an hour or two taking photos, and allow breaks for kids to have snacks, rest or whatever it takes. Your photo session will be relaxed, fun and enjoyable for the whole family. I love to capture how families naturally interact and enjoy each other.
The best advice I can give you is to make sure you’re well rested on the day of your photo session (that goes for kiddos too!), eat something and stay well hydrated. Believe it or not, bad moods can show up in pictures! The better everyone feels, the better you’ll look.
Newborn sessions take place in the convenience of your own home. It’s best to have your baby’s newborn shoot within the first 10 days but I will follow you home from the hospital if you’ll let me! They are more likely to sleep through different settings and they take well to being positioned. During your newborn session, I will set up my portable studio and take a combination of studio and lifestyle pictures. If your home is small or dark please consider my natural light studio. If conditions are ideal, we can also take some outdoor newborn portraits.
I never rush a session, especially a newborn session. You should plan on anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. Mom and Dad are learning how to care for their new addition with diaper changes and feedings. And my assistant and I work patiently to try to get those awesome shots with Baby’s head balancing on his or her soft, chubby little hands or those sweet, little wrinkles on Baby’s back.
The best time for your baby’s photo session is when they first start sitting up by themselves, before they begin crawling. At that age, they usually smile more often and react to their environment. And who doesn’t want pictures of those chubby little cheeks and toothless smiles?
I like to photograph children doing what they do best… being kids. Some ideas for your session may be playing at home, jumping on the bed, going for a walk, spending your time at the beach, or playing in the playground. In the studio, I like to have a little chat and make kids comfortable. It’s not necessary to have them be really posed, I like to get them comfortable in a chair and get natural expressions and looks.
Kids are at their best when they are rested and well fed, so just after a nap can be a good time for photos. Snacks and drinks are essential for keeping little ones motivated and content. I encourage you to allow your children to be themselves and I will capture the moments that make you love them. Having your children enjoy being photographed makes the session more enjoyable for everyone.
These sessions usually take place within the last month of pregnancy around the 8 month mark. That way, your belly is nice and full, without you being uncomfortable. But if you wish to take photos sooner we can take them whenever you are comfortable. I have many ideas for poses and I promise to make you comfortable and capture the joy and anticipation of your impending arrival.
Locations and Times
Sessions are done 1 ½ to 2 hours before sunset; also know as the golden hour. This beautiful light also occurs for about 1 to 1 ½ hours after sunrise, so if you are up for that, I am too! There is no substitute for natural light. God knew what He was doing! Hehe.
Parks, beaches, historic/urban areas and your own backyard are all great locations for photos. You can also come to my studio as it has beautiful natural light. If you do not have a location in mind when booking your photo session, I can recommend a few places and make sure we choose the perfect spot for you.
